Wang Yi Holds Talks with Foreign Minister Mahamoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti

On January 7, 2014, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Foreign Minister Mahamoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti at the Foreign Ministry of Djibouti.

Wang Yi expressed, China and Djibouti will celebrate the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relationship. The bilateral relations have achieved substantial development. China has actively joined in the construction of infrastructure and livelihood projects in Djibouti. Bilateral trade and investment have unceasingly increased. Djibouti has become an important gateway for Chinese commodities to enter into East African countries as well as a key port for Chinese naval fleets to replenish and rest. Djibouti enjoys a significant strategic location and considerable potentials for development. China is ready to work with Djibouti to promote partnership of mutual trust and to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in all fields. China is willing to build an upgraded version of China-Djibouti cooperation on infrastructure construction and to encourage competent and credible enterprises to be more active joining in port and transportation construction in Djibouti so as to enhance the status of Djibouti as a transportation hub of East Africa. China is ready to increase support for Djibouti's livelihood projects, to explore bilateral cooperation in the fields of defence and security and to work together for coping with threats of piracy and terrorism.

Youssouf expressed that China is an important cooperative partner of Africa and of Djibouti. Djibouti-China relationship is of great strategic significance to Djibouti and is the priority for Djibouti's foreign relations. China has offered great help for Djibouti in the fields of infrastructure construction, education, health and use of water resources. It has greatly enhanced Djibouti's ability of sustainable development and brought vigor and vitality for national construction of Djibouti. Djibouti hopes that China will continue to provide strong support to Djibouti. Djibouti is ready to strengthen cooperation with China in all fields including military affairs and security in order to upgrade bilateral relations to a new high and to unceasingly enrich the strategic value of China-Djibouti cooperation.

Following the talks, Wang Yi and Youssouf jointly signed an agreement on mutual visa exemption for holders of diplomatic and service passports.
