In the evening of December 12 2013, the Reception Marking the 30th Anniversary of the Spokesperson Mechanism of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Advent of New Year with Foreign Journalists in China was held at the Dadu Museum of Art in Beijing. The Chinese and foreign guests were gathered together to embrace the new year. Foreign Minister Wang Yi was present.
Wang Yi said that the year 2013 has been an extraordinary year in China's development. The Third Plenum of the 18th CPC Central Committee mapped out the comprehensive deepening of reform, holding out a bright prospect for the nation. We are making vigorous efforts to explore a path of major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics. Much success has been achieved by China's diplomacy in the new era, thanks to its global vision, its innovative drive and its ability to reflect the trend of the times.
Wang Yi pointed out that, no changes are more evident in our changing world than in China. To make a country of 1.3 billion a modern country may be the greatest saga in human history, but it is certainly the most stupendous accomplishment in today's world. China has found a development path suited to its national conditions. History has, and will continue to show that this path is entirely correct. The China story is a success story, which depends, first and foremost, on our own efforts. At the same time, the effective role of foreign journalists is also crucial. Hope that the journalists would present a full and genuine picture of China, and become a good bridge between the Chinese people and people of the rest of the world. The Chinese government will, as always, welcome foreign journalists to cover China and offer still better services and more conveniences.
Wang Yi stressed that, this year marks the 30th anniversary of the spokesperson mechanism of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A total of 27 have served as spokespersons of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the past 30 years. The spokesperson mechanism has become an important window on the country's reform and opening-up and a key symbol for China's development and progress. Standing now at a new starting point, the spokespersons of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to speak for peace and development, promote the idea of win-win cooperation and sow the seeds of friendship and trust far and wide.
Li Zhaoxing, former Foreign Minister and former spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spoke on behalf of the spokespersons. He happily recalled his work as a spokesperson before and expressed his best wishes for the continuous development of the spokesperson mechanism.
The foreign journalists spoke positively of the great achievements of China's development and thanked the Chinese government for offering assistance and conveniences to them. They expressed that they would do more and better jobs on coverage of China in the coming year, to promote mutual communication and understanding between China and the world.
Around 500 guests were present at the reception including heads of relevant departments of the State Council and Beijing municipality, previous spokespersons of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, foreign journalists based in China, press officers of foreign embassies in China, and heads of major Chinese media. The reception was co-sponsored by the Foreign Affairs Office of the People's Government of Beijing Municipality.
By December 2013, there have been 445 foreign news agencies from 59 countries stationed in China, with a total of nearly 700 journalists.
