President Jacob Zuma of South Africa Meets with Vice President Li Yuanchao

On December 11, 2013, President Jacob Zuma of South Africa met with Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao, who attended the funeral of Nelson Mandela, as Special Representative of President Xi Jinping, in Pretoria.

Li Yuanchao handed on the letter with the personal signature of President Xi Jinping to Jacob Zuma. In the letter, President Xi Jinping said, Nelson Mandela is an old friend of the Chinese people. On behalf of the Chinese government and the Chinese people, I express the deep condolences for his death. I believe that the South African people will inherit the legacy of Mr. Mandela and will continuouly make new achievements for national development. We stand ready, along with the South African side, to push forward China-South Africa comprehensive strategic partnership.

Jacob Zuma thanked President Xi Jinping, the Chinese government and the Chinese people for the sincere condolences. He said that South Africa will continue and develop South Africa- China friendship pioneered by Nelson Mandela.

Li Yuanchao said that the Chinese government and the Chinese people cherish China-South Africa friendship, and are willing to work with South Africa to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state and to promote the in-depth development of China-South Africa relations.

Prior to the meeting, Li Yuanchao attended the farewell ceremony for Nelson Mandela, and expressed condolences to Mandela's family.
